Ask students what they already know about story elements.
Read "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" to examine the elements of a short story and discuss as a whole class.
Reading Section 3/1/10: Short Story Notes, Glencoe Lit p. 2-3: In groups of 3 or 4, take Cornell Notes on short story elements. Have students share notes on Elmo and add missing information where necessary.

Reading Section 3/1/10: Scan for Vocabulary Glencoe Lit p. 6-13: Work in pairs to list the words you do not know, define them in easy English. Define ALL of the words you don't know.
Speaking Section 3/1/10: Active Reading Strategies, Glencoe Lit p. 4-5: Break class into 7 groups and assign each group a reading strategy. Supply each with a sheet of paper to create a visual chart. Have groups present their strategy to the class using the ELMO. Post the strategies to use during reading of short stories.
